Witnessing Truth: The Pillar of Accountability
The verse "And [by] the witness and what is witnessed" reminds us that Allah is the ultimate witness to every deed, and that human witnesses are also instruments of divine accountability. In Islamic jurisprudence, the testimony of two reliable witnesses is required for contracts, divorce, and crimes, reflecting the Qur’anic principle that truth must be corroborated. The hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that "Truthfulness leads to righteousness" further underscores the sanctity of testimony. By recognizing that both Allah and human witnesses observe our actions, we are compelled to maintain integrity in speech and deed, lest we become hypocrites who deceive ourselves and others. This verse thus serves as a moral compass, guiding us to live transparently, knowing that every act is under the scrutiny of both divine and earthly witnesses.
85:3
The Final Opportunity: Repent Before the Burning Fire
This verse warns that those who inflict harm—"torture"—upon believers and refuse to turn back will face the irreversible punishment of Hell. In Islamic theology, repentance (tawbah) is the only remedy for such transgression; it requires sincere remorse, cessation of the sin, and a firm intention to avoid it again (Qur’an 2:25; 2:256). Scholars like Ibn Taymiyyah and Al‑Ghazali emphasize that true repentance must be accompanied by a change of heart and deeds, lest the sinner merely performs a ritual act. The burning fire symbolizes the certainty of divine justice, urging believers to recognize that no act, however small, escapes Allah’s awareness. By embracing repentance, one not only averts punishment but also opens the door to barakah, spiritual purification, and closeness to the Creator.
85:10
The Promise of Verdant Eternity
The Qur’an’s imagery of gardens with rivers is not merely poetic; it is a concrete promise of reward for those who combine sincere belief (iman) with consistent righteous action (amal). Scholars such as Ibn al‑Qayyim affirm that gardens are the final abode where believers receive perpetual sustenance, while the Prophet’s hadith—‘Actions are judged by intentions’—reminds us that faith alone is insufficient without deeds. This verse echoes the prophetic teaching that true iman is active; it is a living faith that manifests in kindness, charity, and obedience. The ‘great attainment’ refers to the eternal bliss of Jannah, a state of unending joy and spiritual nourishment. By aligning our daily conduct with this promise, we cultivate a spiritual garden that grows with each righteous act, ensuring our souls remain nourished by the rivers of divine mercy.
85:11
The Weight of Divine Justice
In verse 85:12, the Qur’an reminds believers that Allah’s retribution (ʿadhāb) is severe, a warning that every deed is recorded and will be judged. Classical scholars such as Ibn Kathir explain that this severity is not punitive for its own sake but a manifestation of divine justice—ensuring that every injustice is corrected. Yet the Qur’an balances this with the concept of Taqwa, encouraging believers to seek Allah’s forgiveness (Istighfar) before the moment of accountability. The verse thus serves as a dual reminder: 1) to live with constant awareness of divine scrutiny, and 2) to harness that awareness as motivation for righteous conduct and sincere repentance. This interplay between justice and mercy is central to Islamic ethics, urging believers to act with integrity, knowing that even a small misstep can trigger severe consequences if left unchecked.
85:12
The Eternal Cycle of Creation: Embracing Allah’s Origin and Repetition
The verse 85:13 reminds us that Allah is the One who initiates every act of creation and the One who continually renews it. Islamic scholars, from Ibn Taymiyyah to Al‑Ghazali, have highlighted this duality as proof of divine unity (tawhid) and the certainty of the Resurrection (qiyamah). The repeated creation underscores that Allah’s power is not a one‑off event but an ongoing process—mirrored in the cycles of nature, the renewal of the soul after death, and the daily opportunities we have to re‑create our character. Recognizing this teaches humility: we are both creations and participants in a divine pattern that never ends.

Reader Action
Daily Actions
Whenever you commit to a promise, speak, or act, pause and affirm that both Allah and a human witness will observe your words and deeds. 85:3
Today, name one injustice you have committed or witnessed, and seek Allah’s forgiveness through sincere repentance. 85:10
Each day, commit to one new righteous act that stems from your belief, and let it be a step toward the gardens of Paradise. 85:11
Weekly Challenge
Witness Integrity Journal:
1. Each day, whenever you make a promise, give an opinion, or testify in a situation, write down the event, your words, and whether you felt fully truthful.
2. At the end of the week, count how many times you were 100% truthful, how many times you hesitated, and identify the root cause of hesitation.
3. Set a concrete goal (e.g., "I will double-check my intentions before speaking") and practice it for the next week.
Outcome Measurement: By week’s end, you should have a clear record of your honesty levels and a targeted plan to improve accountability. 85:3
Duas
O Allah, keep my heart steadfast in truth, guard my tongue from falsehood, and make my words and deeds a testimony that pleases You. Protect me from the deceit of my own heart and from the fear of human judgment. Grant me the courage to speak truth and the humility to accept the testimony of others. 85:3
O Allah, I acknowledge the suffering I have inflicted upon others. Forgive me, cleanse my heart from the pride that kept me from repentance, and grant me the humility to seek Your mercy before the Fire consumes me. 85:10
Reflection
In moments where I have hesitated to speak truth or kept a promise, did I do so because I feared the eyes of others, or because I feared the eyes of Allah? How can I align my actions so that both witnesses are satisfied?
When have I allowed myself to justify harm to others, thinking I can hide it from Allah? How can I transform this mindset into genuine remorse and corrective action?
