O Prophet! If any of you divorce women, divorce them during their period of purity, and calculate their term. And be pious before God, your Lord. And do not evict them from their homes, nor shall they leave, unless they have committed a proven adultery. These are the limits of God—whoever oversteps God’s limits has wronged his own soul. You never know; God may afterwards bring about a new situation.
65:2
Once they have reached their term, either retain them honorably, or separate from them honorably. And call to witness two just people from among you, and give upright testimony for God. By that is exhorted whoever believes in God and the Last Day. And whoever fears God—He will make a way out for him.

The Unexpected Provision: Trusting Allah's Hidden Plan
The verse reminds us that true provision transcends our limited vision. Scholars like Ibn Taymiyyah note that reliance on Allah (tawakkul) is a form of gratitude, acknowledging that our resources are ultimately granted by Him. The decree of extent (qadar) assures that every event unfolds within a divine plan, yet our sincere trust invites unforeseen blessings. By placing trust, we open ourselves to Allah’s mercy, which often arrives from sources beyond our expectation—be it an unexpected job offer, a timely help, or a sudden insight. This trust transforms anxiety into gratitude, turning every need into an opportunity to recognize Allah’s providence. 65:3
The Divine Purge: Taqwa as the Path to Cleansing and Reward
Taqwa, the reverent fear of Allah, is not terror but a profound awareness of His presence that motivates sincere repentance and righteous action. Scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah note that Allah’s promise to remove sins is both literal and spiritual: sins are erased from the record and the heart is cleansed. Al‑Ghazali emphasizes that this removal is accompanied by an increase in reward—each act of repentance multiplies the believer’s blessings. The verse reminds us that the path to divine mercy is through conscious fear, which turns regret into gratitude and misdeeds into opportunities for growth. By embracing taqwa, we align our inner intentions with outward deeds, ensuring that our fear of Allah becomes a catalyst for continual purification and elevated reward. 65:5
The Taste of Consequence: A Call to Mindful Choices
The verse reminds us that every affair—whether a thought, a word, or an action—has a tangible outcome. Islamic scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah emphasize that the believer’s intention (niyyah) determines the fate of deeds: a well‑intentioned act becomes a source of reward, while a heedless act leads to loss. Al‑Ghazali’s *Ihya’ ‘Ulum al‑Din* warns that neglecting the moral consequences of one’s affairs results in spiritual decay. The Qur’an’s use of the word *taḥtāb* (taste) evokes a sensory experience of regret, urging us to foresee the results of our choices. By consciously aligning our actions with divine guidance, we transform potential loss into a means of gaining barakah and avoiding the “bad consequence” of heedlessness. 65:9
The Cosmic Confirmation of Divine Competence
The verse affirms that Allah’s creative act extended to seven heavens and the earth, mirroring each other, establishing a cosmological hierarchy. The mention of "His command descends among them" indicates the omniscient decree that flows from the heavens to the earth, reminding believers that every event is under divine authority. The phrase "Allah is over all things competent" (Qawwam) underscores His absolute sovereignty and management. Islamic scholarship, such as Al‑Bukhari’s hadith on the universe’s order, reinforces this. The verse invites us to view worldly affairs not as random but as manifestations of divine wisdom. Recognizing that Allah encompasses all knowledge compels humility, discourages arrogance, and fosters trust in His plan. It also strengthens the principle of tawakkul—trusting in Allah while taking responsibility, knowing that our actions are guided by His perfect decree. 65:12
Guarding the Sanctity of the Iddah: A Divine Blueprint for Divorce
The verse of An‑Nur 65:1 codifies the *iddah*—a divine safeguard that protects the rights of the woman, preserves the sanctity of marriage, and prevents hasty decisions that could harm either party. Scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah explain that the *iddah* is both a physical and moral waiting period, allowing the woman to recover from the emotional shock of divorce and to verify whether the pregnancy is hers. Al‑Ghazali stresses that the limits set by Allah are not arbitrary but serve to maintain social order and protect the vulnerable. By keeping count and fearing Allah, a Muslim upholds *taqwa*, ensuring that divorce is not a mere transaction but a measured, ethical act. Failure to observe these limits, as the verse warns, constitutes self‑wrongdoing and can lead to unforeseen consequences. Thus, the *iddah* is a concrete manifestation of divine justice and mercy, a bridge between the earthly act of separation and the eternal accountability before Allah. 65:1

When have I allowed fear of Allah to be merely intellectual, and how would my actions change if that fear translated into tangible repentance and increased reward?
